Without writing too much text on mandala art, Let me get into action! Cheer up! Let’s learn how to draw a mandala from the steps described below.Following are the step by step instructions on drawing an easy mandala art for beginners. These are easy steps to follow on creating a basic mandala. There are complex mandalas also. That will be updated on my upcoming blog posts.

Materials Required for drawing mandala are:

  1. A4 sheet paper
  2. Pencil and Fine Liners
  3. Geometrical Box (Compass & Protractor)
  4. Eraser
  5. Scale/Rulers

These materials are not a must to start your passion. You can create a mandala art freely using a pen/pencil and paper.Just try to figure out the shape.

How to Draw Mandala Step By Step?

First process in creating mandala art is forming a grid. Understanding the formation of grid is the important part in mandala art drawing. You can use a graph paper as a beginner to draw mandala art.Grid construction can be done via several ways, one of them is described below.

Step 1 : Mark the center of your worksheet – the starting point(a dot). In an A4 sheet paper the center is approximately at the intersection of lines drawn through horizontal mid point and vertical mid point of your worksheet i.e. (10.5 cm ,14.8 cm ). We get a plus symbol finally as shown in the picture. Don’t worry too much about finding and marking the exact center point. It can be approximate.

We get finally a circle made with dots/points as shown in the picture. Mark the points correctly as it all depends on the symmetry of the grid we made out.

Step 3 : Now Draw lines from each 10 degree point passing through the center extending to join opposite point on other side. Join all the points in the same way which passes through the center point that forms a pattern as shown.A point to keep in mind while drawing these lines is do not make the lines so darken. Because we need to erase any leftover lines or part of it at the end to get a clean mandala.Make sure it passes through the center.

That is, firstly draw a circle of let’s say of radius 1 cm and above that circle draw another concentric circle with any radius say 2 cm and so draw as many concentric circles you need to make patterns. While drawing a mandala, we are moving from inner circle and proceeding to the outer circle to complete the design. Hence form the basic grid. These concentric circles are not defined to a limit. But not infinity! It’s limit to your creativity and space you chosen to draw a mandala.

Next part is to design the grid we formed. While designing, it gives you the entire freedom to explore your creativity.Designing gives a vibrant look to your mandala. It is the concept of filling the geometrical shapes you drawn with patterns, fillers, petal designs, etc.

Step 5 : Lets start designing these concentric circles using several patterns including geometrical shapes, lines, floral patterns, dots, etc as shown below. While drawing a Mandala it start designing also from the inner circle to the outer circle.

Follow this kind of any pattern designing around the center point to get a complete circular mandala. Following will be our final mandala with all the design drawn.Pretty Cool! Right?

  2. While coloring a mandala stick with using maximum two or three colors rather than using too many color combinations.
  3. First draw a light outline with your pencil(not darken) if you are a beginner then use fine liners to finish it.
  4. Use geometrical shapes like triangles, circles, square, lines, arcs, etc to create your mandala.
  5. Mandalas need not be in circle itself. It can be a concentric square, triangles, etc any shape you want.
  6. Start small around the center.Don’t worry about perfection.Gradually it takes the shape of a mandala.
